Art therapy uses art as the primary mode of expression, alongside talking with an art therapist. It aims to reduce distress and improve social, emotional and mental health by promoting insight, self-compassion and a sense of agency and self-worth.
During art therapy, you are supported by an art therapist to use art to express and articulate often complex thoughts and feelings through art making. This may be following difficult or traumatic experiences which may be hard to talk about.
-
Quite simply, art therapy is for everyone. There is no need for ‘artistic talent’, just an openness to try a new way of exploring your inner world and your self expression.
Art therapy allows us to express emotional distress through art making when words are too difficult.

One to one art therapy appointments vary from person to person.
During each session you will have an opportunity to use art materials to explore your emotional landscape. This process can be a combination of directed exercises, art making with the art therapist or free choice art making.
Each appointment will last 50 minutes with time put aside to discuss the art making process.
The therapist and client will create a plan together to guide the appointments and this will be reviewed on a regular basis.
Appointments are usually on a weekly basis.

Group art therapy sessions create a safe space for group members to explore art making with others.
The group creates opportunities to explore new and different ways of relating to others and self.
The group can become a supportive space to share insight of shared experiences and of the group experience itself.
Group sessions are around 2 hours long.
